This pix are from the arrival of the Nā Ohana Holo Moana canoes from across the South Pacific that joined the Hōkulea on her return to Hilo, Hawaii. Many may recall the canoes had to be fumigated off shore to prevent invasive pests from the more remote islands.

Here’s the Hōkule`a on her return from the Tahiti and Samoa in 2014. The crew in this voyage was mostly the 2nd generation of voyagers with few originals in the mix.

Most of the Hawaiian music written in the late 19th & early 20th century was written with a melodic structure but no arrangement. It was left to the interpretation of the musicians. As new instruments and styles emerged, the music went with it. That’s what makes it so fascinating.
