This is the earliest available recored Hawaiian song; Aloha `Oe by Nani Alapai and Henry Clark released on Columbia records in 1911. An earlier recording in 1898 by Berliner Gramophone on wax cylinders is lost. Most Hawaiian music was recorded on the continent, there were 100s of records by 1920.

I really want a recordng of this. When I’m in Honolulu next, I’m going to stop by KGU radio to see if they have a copy.

Frank Ferera, Born in Honolulu: June 12, 1885 of Portuguese ancestry. Of all Hawaiian recordings made between 1915 and 1930, it is said that Frank Ferera appeared on at least a 1/4 of them. Some of the estimated 2,000 discs he cut remain available on Hawaiian CD compilations to this day. Amazing

I’ve been listening to almost entirely Hawaiian music. Apple Music’s algorithm doesn’t recognize that and pushes everything else. Could be that most of my music didn’t come from Apple but from albums, CDs and music archives.

Recently stumbled upon this album. The Makapu’u Sand Band with Iaukea Bright. I met him when he had a show on KCCN. His moniker was “The Kapahulu Common Mango”. Down home island music. music.apple.com/us/album/…

I’ve been able to source 3 albums of The Polynesians. They were active in the late 30s on the mainland playing with Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. They merged Hawaiian and Jazz with their smooth harmomies. They recored 28 albums between 1957 and 1967 on Crown Records
