The song Heha Waipio has an interesting background. Written by Sam Li`a Kalainaina, Jr. in Waipio in 1904 for a friend who neighbors were making fun of about a house he was buiding. They said it was too fancy Here’s an interview with Sam where he tells the story. His handwritten lyrics attached

The Apple Music algorithm has gotten much better when it does “continuing play” after an album. It’s pretty much keeping the same style and era as the album. I played Bill Kaiwa’s 1963 album and the songs that followed were spot on. Didn’t used to be so.

Just found the original recording of Hanohano Hanalei by Alfred Alohikea (the songwriter) from 1928. It’s the only recording of the prolific songwriter solo. He was born Sept. 10, 1884 & Died Sept. 15, 1936, he also served in the Hawai’i Territorial Legislature representing the Island of Kaua’i.


Just came across this interview with Ainsley Halemanu. Blast from the past. He played for us at the Princess Garden bar in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center in the middle of Waikiki in the last 80’s, I was GM. He’s family to my ex-wife. Quite the entertainmener and a character.
