Seeing a round of posts about to do apps again. Seems to cycle around every now and then. I haven’t change my set up in at least 10 years.
I’m not a gamer, so I came to “Last of Us” via the series. One of the attractions was Pedro Pascal. Regular shows don’t kill off the hero before the end, but this isn’t a regular show.
The first recording of Hawaiian music. 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. The Royal Hawaiian Troubadours perform “Aole Wau E Paoina Iaoe”.

Came across this old Hawaii PBS show from 1980 with Charles K. L. Davis. What a talent.
If you’ve never heard the origin story of the song Heha Waipi’o that was the song Hālau Nā Kamalei o Līlīlehua performed in the Merrie Monarch `Auana lat night.
This was chicken skin by Hālau Nā Kamalei O Līlīlehua last night.
With all of the attention on Hilo, Take some time and watch this PBS Hawaii profile on Hilo from 1988. I fondly remember this era of Hilo. www.youtube.com/watch
Hālau Mōhala ʻIlima ‘Auana was so elegant. Love the choice of Alii ‘Iolani
When were driving to Hilo this morning I saw so many trucks with OC-1s on top heading to Kona. On the way back home this afternoon, we saw the same thing going back the other way. That was me for 20 years.
Since I started study old Hawaiian music I understand where these song we hear all of the time came from. Who wrote the song and when, who first recorded it and when. Most of the songs being danced to in Merrie Monarch are the same. In my head, I hear an earlier version in head.
Hālau Mōhala ʻIlima (My Daughter’s Halau) is doing “Alii Iolani” for their ‘Auana performace. I love that song. The Makaha Son’s version is popular, but I think they are more likely to use something closer to the John K. Almeida 1925 version.
It was great seeing Sig Zane in his Hilo store today. It’s been way too long. He did this design for cafe in 1996. He was still in the old location on Keawe street. We used the design on menu covers, a sign and shirts. The story behind it is too long to tell here.
There were a lot bands in the parade. Hawaii County, Navy, Hilo High, Waiākea high and Waiakea Middle, Kamehameha and a mainland High school.
